What to do before trying to get pregnant?

There are so many things that you can do before beginning to try that will help you have a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby down the line! Here are a few:

1. See a doctor. This may sound intense for someone who’s not even trying yet, but it’s very wise to consult with a professional before you start trying to conceive. Visit your gynecologist and internist and confirm with them that your vaccinations are up-to-date and your screening results come back free and clear. Don’t forget to list off all the medications you’re taking to confirm that they’re safe to take while pregnant!

2. Watch your diet. Yes, you should always be trying to eat healthy, but when you’re trying to get pregnant it’s helpful to adhere to a more specific menu. Discuss your current diet with your doctor and determine what slight changes will help improve your chances of conceiving. Do you need to cut down on caffeine? Which cheeses should stay off the menu? Which fish are high in mercury, and how do you avoid them? Your doctor can give a quick list of do’s and don’ts when it comes to your pre-pregnancy diet.

3. Take Prenatal Vitamins. Prenatal vitamins are essential for preventing birth defects, and it’s helpful to start taking them before you start trying to conceive. There are several different types, some over the counter, some by prescription. You and your doctor can decide what works best together.

4. Consider a genetic carrier screening. This is a simple test that will determine whether you or your partner are carriers of a genetic mutation that could impact your future baby. On the small chance that there is something wrong, today’s scientific advancements make it possible to test an embryo for a genetic disorder before that embryo is ever transferred into the mother’s uterus. Genetic carrier screenings are often covered by insurance, and they can really help with peace of mind.

5. Prioritize healthy living. As soon as you start trying to have a baby, you should start thinking of your body and womb as a tiny incubator for your child. Be responsible about your health and wellness: No smoking. No drinking. No drugs. Eat well and exercise in moderation. This can be easier said than done, but it is absolutely essential for the health of your baby. And nothing is more important than that.
