Atheists are the reason for soft policies?

Question

So I had this one guy tell me that the reason the US doesn't give Capital Punishment to child molesters, and murderers etc... Is because of Athiests. This really angered me! I was commenting back to him explaining how there's no correlation between religion (or lack thereof) and the death penalty. What do you guys think of this?

All he's doing is blaming something he doesn't like for something he wants but can't have, it's akin to a child saying they hate their mum because they want sweets but aren't allowed. 
I'm an atheist and it has nothing to do with my feelings on the death penalty, which is that it doesn't do anyone any good to put someone to death, that we as a society as a whole are responsible in part for the things our fellow community do.

Totally unrelated. I am agnostic and I do support the death penalty for multiple time pedophilia cases. Why should we pay to keep that scum alive in jail for the rest of their lives? Take em out back 🔫 unless you live in Utah, I don't know any other place that breeds pedophilia. That's not society failing them, that's science and genetics. Their wires got crossed and there's only one way to fix that after multiple offenses and attempted rehabilitation treatment 🔫💣🔪⚰.  So if you compare my opinion to the nice lady above you can see that religion has nothing to do with how we feel about the death penalty.
